Four Generations of Service
Our history spans four generations.
Frank Kohlman was born in Albany, New York in 1860. When he was five, his family migrated to the Fond du Lac area and lived on a farm. He moved to St. Cloud and in 1913, he purchased a small-town hardware store and named it Kohlman’s Hardware Store.
The business grew under Frank’s son, Herman, selling not only hardware but also farm implements, oils, paint, and the addition of tinning work.
Robert was in World War II, and upon his return, he joined his Father in the business. Robert and his wife, Lorraine added gifts and changed the name to Kohlman’s Hardware and Gift Store.
Douglas Kohlman worked for his Dad when he returned from Vietnam and is the fourth generation to take over the business. In 1970, Douglas made the decision to specialize in heating, ventilating, and air conditioning. He moved the business to the St. Cloud location on Church Street in 1984, where it stands today as D.R. Kohlman, Inc.
